America is Fat – they’re killing us through our food – what can yoga do?

What can yoga do about fat?

Another news article today about which is the “most overweight” state in the US. Mississippi most obese state, Colorado least

No one is very surprised about this but it is interesting that the problem keeps getting worse.  Someone is trying to kill us.  Multiple someones.  The people involved have their reasons.  There is money involved in giving us exactly what we crave in an easy form that we can stuff or gulp down fast.  It is even better if the stuff leaves you a bit unsatisfied and wanting more.

I intend to explore this from the point of view of the yoga tradition.  Nothing is sacred.  Even the yogic diet will be examined as it is my belief that what was once healthy may not be now.  And don’t expect shame, guilt, or any kind of “personal responsibility” rap.  We are way beyond that.  The guy in the picture is being stalked by people who want him to keep stuffing down the things that are killing him!

The tough thing for the bigger guy in the picture up above is that even if he wants to change, his samskaras (stored mental impressions that define and can control us) will tend to keep him rolling in a certain direction.  There are many people and products around him that will conspire to roll him there as well, until they need a crane to lift him into the grave.  Look at him.  He is us.  Yoga provides some of the tools needed to examine and work with samskaras and break free of what surrounds us.  There is also the opportunity to use this freedom to literally change the actions of the people and institutions that are making this poor guy fat!
